Why Is My Truck Overweight?
A carrier’s guide to axle weight, load distribution, the Federal Bridge Formula, equipment ratings, and route-specific weight requirements.
You pulled onto the scale expecting everything to be fine. Then the numbers come back: one axle is overweight. The first question may be, “But I’m under 80,000 pounds. How am I overweight?”
Because gross weight is not the only number that matters. A truck can be under the overall Federal Interstate gross-weight limit and still have too much weight concentrated on an axle or axle group. Federal Interstate limits also interact with the Federal Bridge Formula, while equipment ratings and state or route-specific requirements can create additional constraints.
Do not ask only, “Am I under 80,000?” Ask, “Is the weight legal and properly distributed?”
Understand the Federal Interstate Limits
For vehicles operating on the Interstate System, the basic Federal limits generally include 20,000 pounds on a single axle, 34,000 pounds on a tandem axle, and 80,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, subject to the Federal Bridge Formula and applicable exceptions or grandfather provisions.
The Bridge Formula considers the number of axles and the distance between them to determine how much weight a group of two or more consecutive axles may carry. When the single-axle, tandem-axle, gross-weight, or Bridge Formula limits produce different maximums, the lowest applicable limit controls.

Being below 80,000 pounds does not automatically mean every axle group is legal. Too much of the load can be concentrated toward one part of the vehicle, putting excessive weight on an axle or axle group even when the entire combination remains below the gross limit.
Axle spacing matters because concentrating weight over a shorter distance creates greater stress on bridges than spreading that same weight across a longer configuration. That is why the Federal Bridge Formula exists.
Why Load Distribution Matters
Where the freight sits affects where the weight goes. If too much cargo is concentrated in one area, the load can put excessive weight on an axle or axle group.
Depending on the equipment and load, correcting an axle-weight problem may involve redistributing freight or making an appropriate equipment adjustment. Do not rely on appearance or a rule of thumb. Scale it and verify the numbers.
Do Not Assume the Shipper’s Weight Is Enough
A shipping document can tell you something about the freight, but it does not replace knowing the actual loaded weight of the vehicle and its axle groups. If a load is close enough to applicable limits that distribution could become an issue, an accurate scale weight can identify the problem before the truck gets deep into the trip.
The Bridge Formula Is Why “80,000” Is Not the Whole Story
The Federal Bridge Formula controls the relationship between weight, number of axles, and axle spacing on the Interstate System. FHWA explains that spreading weight over additional axles or increasing the distance between axles reduces concentrated loading on bridges.
Federal Bridge Formula:
W = 500 [ LN ÷ (N − 1) + 12N + 36 ]
W = maximum weight for the axle group; L = distance in feet between the outer axles; N = number of axles in the group.
GVWR and GAWR Are Different Numbers
GVWR is the manufacturer-established Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. GAWR is the manufacturer-established Gross Axle Weight Rating. These ratings should not be confused with Federal Interstate highway weight limits.
A Federal highway limit does not automatically mean the equipment itself is rated to carry that amount. Axles, tires, and other components can have applicable ratings and limitations. A proper weight check considers both legal highway limits and the ratings that apply to the actual equipment.
Federal Limits Are Not the End of Route Planning
The 20,000 / 34,000 / 80,000 figures are Federal Interstate System standards, subject to the Bridge Formula and exceptions. They do not mean every road automatically allows an 80,000-pound vehicle. Off the Interstate System, states may establish their own commercial vehicle weight standards, and routes can involve posted bridges, local restrictions, permits, or other limitations.

What Should You Do If the Scale Says You Are Overweight?
Do not ignore it. Determine where the problem actually is. Is the gross combination overweight? Is one axle or axle group overweight? Is the cargo poorly distributed? Does the configuration comply with the Bridge Formula? Is there an equipment-rating issue? Does the route impose another restriction? Does the movement require a permit?
Correct the problem before continuing when continued operation would be unlawful or unsafe. A delivery appointment does not make an overweight condition disappear.
The DQ Weight Check
Gross weight: Do I know the actual loaded weight of my combination?
Axles: Do I know how that weight is distributed across the axle groups?
Equipment ratings: Am I within the applicable vehicle, axle, tire, and component ratings?
Bridge Formula: Does my configuration comply with applicable Federal Bridge Formula requirements?
Route: Have I checked applicable state, local, bridge, and route restrictions?
Permits: If the load exceeds ordinary legal limits, have I determined whether the appropriate permit is required and obtained it before movement?
Scale: If I am uncertain about the distribution, have I obtained an accurate weight rather than guessing?
Do Not Guess About Weight
An overweight problem can create delays, require a load adjustment, interfere with delivery appointments, create enforcement problems, and potentially affect safety. The better approach is to know the weight before you roll: know the gross, know the axles, know the equipment, and know the route.
