Now consider another situation. A load appears profitable, but the appointment schedule is unusually tight. Technology may calculate that the trip is theoretically possible. A professional still needs to consider whether accepting it makes operational sense.

Or perhaps a broker provides information that conflicts with something already received. Software can flag the inconsistency. A person may still need to pick up the phone, ask questions and determine what actually happened.

Data provides information. Context gives that information meaning.

That doesn't necessarily mean professional dispatching disappears. Instead, the value of the dispatcher may shift.

The dispatcher of the future may spend less time manually transferring information and more time interpreting information, communicating, negotiating, managing exceptions and helping carriers make informed decisions.

Technology may therefore raise the expectations placed on dispatch professionals. Knowing how to find information may no longer be enough. Professionals may increasingly need to understand how to evaluate it.

Should Owner-Operators Be Concerned About AI Dispatching?

Carriers should be informed rather than impressed simply because a company uses the term AI.

Technology alone doesn't make a dispatch service good. A carrier considering an AI-assisted dispatch service should understand how that technology fits into the operation.

Useful questions include:

A sophisticated system is valuable only when it contributes to a better operation. The technology should serve the carrier—not the other way around.

A trucking company represents real equipment, real operating costs, real responsibilities and real people.

An algorithm doesn't have a family waiting for a driver at home. It doesn't own the truck. It doesn't carry the carrier's operating authority. And it doesn't personally experience the consequences when a poor operational decision is made.

The question shouldn't simply be: “Does this dispatcher use AI?”
